Both the Black Rhinos and the Northern White Rhinos are indigenous to Uganda. However, by 1982, both species had been totally wiped out of the country due to armed conflict, poaching, and mismanagement of their natural habitat. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was thus established in 2005 to reintroduce the Southern White Rhinoceros to Uganda, starting with 4 from Solio Ranch in Kenya, and 2 donated by Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, in the United States. The long-term goal of the sanctuary is to "…build a sustainable Rhinoceros population and relocate rhinos back to their original habitat in Uganda's protected areas". The sanctuary is located approximately 176 kilometres north of the capital city, Kampala. It sits within the Kafu River Basin, a mere 8 kilometres off the main Kampala–Gulu Highway towards the spectacular Murchison Falls on the Great River Nile.

The sanctuary is home to 32 endangered Southern White Rhinos, and it’s the only place in the world where you can do White Rhino trekking. A team of approximately 78 park rangers and security guards keep a 24-hour watch on the rhinos to ensure their safety. The 70 square kilometres (7,000 ha) sanctuary is also home to approximately 40 mammal and reptilian species, including monkeys, antelopes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, and over 250 bird species. As a result, the sanctuary has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for tracking the elusive Shoebill Stocks, Bird Watching, Canoe Rides, Night Walks, Nature Walks, and general relaxation in the peaceful and tranquil wild surroundings of the sanctuary.
