Semuliki National Park – Hot springs here cook an egg

Semuliki National Park is located in Bwamba County, a remote part of Bundibugyo District in the western region of Uganda. It was made a national park in October 1993 and is one of Uganda's newest national parks. Its 219 km2 (85 sq mi) land mass is also East Africa’s only lowland tropical rainforest. The park is one of the richest areas of flora and fauna diversity in Africa, with bird and butterfly species being especially diverse. Semuliki National Park, like many others in western Uganda, lies along Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the great snow-capped Rwenzori ‘Mountains of the Moon’ to the south-east, and Lake Albert to the north. The entire area of Semuliki National Park is a distinct ecosystem within the Albertine Rift which is part of the western arm of the great East African Rift. The Semliki and Lamia Rivers which boarder the park are huge watering attractions for diverse animals, thus giving tourist an almost guaranteed opportunity come up close and personal with wild animals in their natural habitat. The park is particularly famous for being home to the largest population of Uganda Kobs, and it has more than 400 bird species, including the lyre-tailed honey guide.

At least 216 of the bird species in the park, which is whopping 66% of Uganda’s total bird species, are true forest birds, including the rare Oberländer's ground thrush, Sassi's olive greenbul, and nine hornbill species. The park is also home for over 60 mammal species, including buffalos, leopards, hippopotamus, mona monkeys, water chevrotain, bush babies, elephants, and the very rare Pygmy Scaly-tailed Flying Squirrel. The park also has eight primate species and over 455 butterfly species, two hot springs, one of which is the Mumbuga Spring that resembles a geyser with hot water shooting up almost 0.5m high like a fountain. The hot springs also attract a large number of shorebirds and provide salt licks for many animals. Many tourists who visit the park engage in birdwatching, walking to the savannah grassland, hiking through the 13km (8.1 mi) Kirumia Trail, and visiting the hot springs where the water is hot enough to cook eggs and plantain.
