Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the most exciting gorilla trekking destination to visit in Uganda. Located in southwestern Uganda, the park straddles the northern slopes of three Virunga Volcanoes, namely: Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabinyo, and Mt. Muhavura which, from a distance, immediately lure you into a deep and passionate love affair with nature from which no divorce has ever been possible. The park is also part of the larger 434sq kilometer Virunga Conservation area, bordering the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda to the south, and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. Without question, Mgahinga’s most exciting and memorable activity is tracking mountain gorillas in the thick densely forested jungle. Unlike Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which has over 13 gorilla families, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one habituated gorilla family known as the “Nyakagezi” gorilla family which has 11 family members comprised of 2 male silverbacks, 3 adult females, 4 juveniles, and 2 infants. This means that if you are interested in tracking gorillas in Mgahinga, then you should book a Gorilla Trekking Permit, and we recommend that you check availability of permits with us at least three months in advance to stand a good chance of getting it.

Whereas mountain gorilla trekking (read about mountain gorillas) attracts thousands of tourists every year, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also home to the cheeky, absolutely charming, and yet sadly endangered golden monkeys (read about golden monkeys) which, according to a 2003 survey, are the numerically dominant primate species in the area. Just like gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking starts with tourists arriving at the park headquarters at 7:30am for a pre-tracking briefing, and the actual trek starts at about 8:00am. Trekking golden monkeys is not as strenuous as gorilla trekking because golden monkeys live in lower areas, so tourists do not track for more than 3 hours before they see golden monkeys.
