Kidepo Valley National Park could easily, and quite rightly in our view, be described as the “largely undiscovered” 1,442 square kilometres (557 square mile) gem of national park in the wild Karamoja region of north-eastern Uganda. Kidepo is a vast, rugged, and semi-arid land of flowing valleys straddling between the international border frontiers of Uganda, South Sudan, and Kenya. First gazetted as a game reserve by the British colonial government in 1958, Kidepo was later gazetted by the Milton Obote government as a national park in 1962 after independence from Britain.

The park boasts over 77 mammal species, including over 14,000 black Rhinos, thousands of humongous Elephant herds, Lion prides, Leopards, Cheetahs, Antelopes, Waterbucks, Giraffes, Zebras, as well as over 475 bird species – including some extremely rare birds that are only found in Kidepo Valley National Park. Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but we can easily turn the 520 kilometre (320 miles) journey into great fun with stop-overs at great tourist attractions like Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the spectacular Murchison Falls and national park along the Great River Nile, and Aruu Falls found halfway between the northern hinterland towns of Gulu and Kitgum.

These oases of water naturally make Narus Valley the park’s prime game viewing location in the dry season that runs from September to March – a great time to visit the park. Other tourist attractions include truly exhilarating morning and evening game drives, nature walks, sundowner drinks in the park, wild overnight camping, and visits to the mud-hut homesteads of the indigenous Karamojong warriors.
