Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is in southwestern Uganda, and is part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest situated along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and next to the Virunga National Park, all of which makes the area a wildlife ecosystem like no other. Just to give you a little feel, the park provides habitat for 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds including hornbills and turacos, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, and many other endangered species like mountain gorillas. The park is also among the most diverse forests in East Africa, with more than 1,000 flowering plant species, including 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns. The northern sector of the park has many species of Guineo-Congolian flora, including some endangered species like brown mahogany.
The park covers a land mass area of 321 square kilometres, and it is only accessible on foot. It is also a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site that is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. According to the 2019 Gorilla Census, the park is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas, which is almost half of all the mountain gorillas in the world, and this explains why gorilla trekking is one of, if not the most popular tourist activities in the park. There are 14 habituated mountain gorilla groups that are open to tourism, and they are located in four different sectors, namely: Buhoma, Ruhijja, Rushaga and the Nkuringo in the Districts of Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro respectively. The park is also a sanctuary for colobus monkeys, chimpanzees. The park is open to gorilla trekking throughout the year, but the best times are during the dry months, especially from June to August, and from December to January. From a distance, the huge cones of the Virunga volcanoes totally dominate the landscape, seductively urging you to approach it and immerse yourself in its magical embrace.
